One of the most under-appreciated songs of all time
Townes was an extraordinary song writer.
He was most famous for writing "Poncho and Lefty", performed by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.
He was a student of Shakespeare and was appreciated by many. Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Willie Nelson and many more. All of them said without Townes they would not exist. . He died at the age of 52 of a heart attack or drug overdose.
"Panucho and Lefty" has to be one of my favorite songs. When Wilie Nelson and Merle Haggard recorded it, it was an instant classic. One of my favorite versions is by Oklahoman, Hoyt Axton. Hoyt also wrote "Joy to the World" and "Jeramiah was a Bullfrog" Both were performed by Three Dog Night. Both were number one hits. Who knew.
